How Clinical Research Works
Before a new treatment becomes widely available, it goes through several stages of research.
Before Human Studies
Researchers study a potential treatment in the lab to learn more about how it may work and whether it should move forward.
Phase 1
A treatment is tested in people for the first time. These studies usually involve a small group and focus mainly on safety, dosage, and side effects.
Phase 2
The treatment is studied in a larger group. Researchers look more closely at whether it works and continue watching for side effects.
Phase 3
The treatment is tested in a much larger group, often across multiple research locations. Researchers compare results, monitor safety, and gather the data needed for review by the FDA.
Phase 4
After a treatment is approved, research may continue to learn more about long-term safety, real-world use, or new ways the treatment may help.
How to Join a Clinical Trial
Joining a clinical trial usually happens step by step. Our team will walk you through the process and answer your questions along the way.
1. Find a Study
You can sign up for information about studies at Tekton or contact our team to ask what may be available near you.
You can also search for trials across the U.S. using ClinicalTrials.gov.
2. Answer a Few Questions
If a study looks like a possible fit, our team may ask about your age, health history, medications, and other details. This helps us understand whether the study may be appropriate for you.
3. Talk With the Study Team
You will have time to ask questions before deciding anything. You may want to ask:
- What is this study trying to learn?
- How many visits are involved?
- What happens during each visit?
- Are there possible risks or side effects?
- Is payment available for time and travel?
- Could I receive a placebo?
4. Review Informed Consent
Before you join, the study team will explain the study in detail. This is called informed consent.
You will learn about the purpose of the study, what will happen, possible risks and benefits, your rights, and what to expect. You can ask questions before signing anything.
Taking part is always your choice. You can also leave a study at any time.
5. Complete Screening
A screening visit helps confirm whether the study is a good fit and safe for you. This may include a physical exam, lab work, medical history review, or other study-related tests.
6. Take Part in Study Visits
If you qualify and choose to join, you will attend study visits according to the schedule. During these visits, our team will monitor your health, answer questions, and follow the study plan carefully.
Some studies include clinic visits, phone check-ins, electronic diaries, or follow-up appointments.
