If you’re thinking about joining a clinical trial for the first time, it’s good to have questions.
A clinical trial is a research study, and every study is different. Before you decide whether to take part, the study team should explain what the study involves, what your visits may look like, what the possible risks are, and what choices you have.
Here are 20 helpful questions to ask before joining a clinical trial:
- What is this study trying to learn?
- Why might I qualify for this study?
- Has this treatment been studied before?
- Has it been approved for any use already?
- What would I need to do as a participant?
- How many visits are required?
- Will there be blood draws, scans, overnight stays, diaries, or app check-ins?
- How often would I need to come to the study site?
- How long does the study last?
- How is the study treatment given, such as a pill, injection, or infusion?
- Could this affect my current medications or daily routine?
- Is it okay if I or my partner becomes pregnant during the study?
- What are the known risks or side effects?
- Are there any unknown or long-term risks?
- What are the possible benefits, if any?
- What happens if I have a serious side effect or my health gets worse?
- Is there a placebo, or does everyone receive the study treatment?
- Will I receive study-related exams, lab tests, or health information?
- Is payment available for time and travel?
- Can I leave the study if I change my mind?
Before you join any clinical trial, you will go through a process called informed consent. This is when the study team explains the study in detail and gives you time to ask questions.
You should understand what the study is for, what will happen during visits, possible risks and benefits, whether payment is available, and what your rights are as a participant.
Taking part is always your choice. You can ask questions at any time, and you should never feel rushed into making a decision.
