How Obesity Impacts Chronic Diseases: A Closer Look

How Obesity Impacts Chronic Diseases A Closer Look

Obesity is more than a number on a scale–it’s a chronic disease that significantly increases the risk of developing long-term health conditions. At Tekton Research, we’re committed to advancing research in obesity because we know it’s at the core of a larger health crisis.

Understanding and treating obesity isn’t just about weight loss, it’s about improving quality of life and preventing a cascade of chronic diseases that follow when obesity goes untreated.

Obesity and Chronic Disease: A Ripple Effect

Obesity is closely linked to some of the most common chronic conditions we face today, including:

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Insulin resistance is largely influenced by genetics. This resistance can promote fat accumulation, particularly around the organs, which in turn worsens insulin resistance. Breaking this cycle through lifestyle changes, weight management, and medical treatment is a key part of effective long-term management of type 2 diabetes.
  • Cardiovascular Disease: Obesity increases the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other factors that contribute to heart disease and stroke.
  • Liver Disease (NASH/MASH): Fat buildup in the liver can lead to inflammation and scarring, increasing the risk of liver failure.
  • Joint Disorders: Carrying extra weight puts strain on joints, especially in the knees and hips, accelerating wear and tear leading to osteoarthritis.
  • Sleep Apnea and Respiratory Problems: Obesity can cause airways to become blocked during sleep, reducing oxygen levels and impacting cardiovascular health.

These are just a few examples. Obesity’s impact on the body is far-reaching, and in many cases, invisible until more health issues arise.

From the Site: Dr. Jara McDonald’s Perspective

Jara McDonald, MD, FAAFP, DABOM, one of Tekton’s principal investigators, is helping lead the way in both clinical practice and obesity research. A board-certified Family and Obesity Medicine Physician, Dr. McDonald brings not only professional expertise but deeply personal insight into this disease.

“This is an incredibly promising, fast-moving area,” she says. “The promise of new therapies, new drugs, and new plans of care to help people live their best and healthiest lives is why I wanted to do research in this space.”

Changing the Conversation

One of the most harmful misconceptions about obesity is that it’s simply the result of poor lifestyle choices or a lack of willpower. But modern medicine and ongoing research are proving otherwise.

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease, influenced by genetics, environment, hormones, medications, sleep, mental health, and more. It requires evidence-based, individualized treatment.

“I myself have a history of obesity,” Dr. McDonald shares. “I am happy that the medical community is finally acknowledging that obesity is not just a moral failing or a choice, it’s a very difficult-to-treat chronic medical condition, and it deserves care as its own process instead of tagging it like it’s the patient's fault.”

Tekton’s Commitment to Obesity Research

At Tekton Research, we are actively involved in clinical trials aimed at finding better treatments for obesity and the chronic conditions it drives. These studies are essential for developing new medications, behavioral therapies, and care models that offer real, sustainable results.

Our research is rooted in empathy, science, and the belief that patients deserve to be seen, heard, and supported throughout every stage of their journey.

Obesity is not the end of the story–it’s a starting point for better care, better understanding, and better outcomes. And we’re proud to be part of that work.
